Summary – “Simply a must see tour,” – Aneta, Jamboree Project Manager
This tour was designed for anyone with an interest or curiosity in Jewish culture in Lublin Poland.
Over the years, Lublin has placed a very important role within Jewish culture and even more so in the Yiddish language. This tour has been designed to connect all these places connected with the Jewish heritage within Lublin.
The Jewish Culture Tour starts at the Castle Square which, many years ago, was connected to Szeroka Street a traditionally Jewish part of the city. There are many references to the Castle and the Jewish quarter of the city throughout history. You’ll also visit the oldest Jewish Cemetery in Poland – the Old Kirkut.
Next up is the New Jewish Cemetery and the building of the pre-war Academy of the Lublin Sages (Yeshiva Chachmei Lublin) and the Synagogue of the Chevra Nossim Funeral Society (Chewra Nosim) before heading outside the city limits to the extermination camp in Majdanek.
This was the second largest Nazi camp in Europe after Auschwitz and it is believed people of around 50 nationalities were imprisoned here.
