The Greek Minister of Culture, Melina Mercouri, came up with the idea of having a European Capital of Culture(ECC) in the mid-eighties and presented her idea to the EU Cabinet in 1985. 37 cities have been European Capitals of Culture so far, including the likes of Paris, Berlin and Madrid, as well as smaller provincial cities such as Lille, Cork and Weimar.
The goal of ECC is to show the variety and wealth of cultures within Europe, their connections and their roots, and make people realize just how much they have in common with their fellow Europeans. In this way, it promotes understanding and tolerance and has been hailed as a massively successful initiative.
2016 will be the year to jointly celebrate Polish and Spanish culture, with one city being named ECC from each country. For the chosen cities, the title will bring many profits including stronger PR and increased revenue from tourism.
Analysts believe that Wroclaw could attract over 3 million additional tourists per year if it takes the title. In addition to this, the local economy and level of investment will also receive a major boost, cultural/creative industry will gain new dynamics and we can also expect a revitalization of old districts, bringing them back to their former glory. Perhaps most importantly, though, the ECC title will lead to creating new jobs.
